My mother, her grandaughter Madeline, used to tell of how Lydia had pierced ears. Lydia was apparently quite a joker and enjoyed terrifying her grandchildren by putting a large hairpin through her ear. Madeline said the children would plead with her to stop, believing that it must have hurt, but Lydia would just laugh and continue teasing them.
